Wherever You Are… Be There ...

Recently I learned that in traditional native American language there are no words for up or down. There is only “Here” and “There” Isn’t that interesting?

I started thinking about the ups and downs of any business, including my own I had to think about what that really meant and how it can shape my thinking. As I thought about it at a deeper level, I realized the words up or down aren’t the best words to describe any of the states we are in.

Think about how you are feeling right now. Are you excited or happy? You may feel “up”. Are you depressed or anxious? You may feel “down” The reality is whatever state you are in, that’s where you are. You are “here”, and your goal is to get somewhere “there”

Redefining your use of the words up and down allows you completely rethink your situation and more importantly decide what you are going to do to move forward.

Let’s remove up and down from the equation.

Your business, your life, your relationships, your bank account. You can replace it with

HERE is where I am. You can own the situation. It doesn’t really matter how you got here, or everything that has happened in the past to put you here. Here is where you are. So now let’s just deal with it.

Once you’ve decided on where you are, you can focus on “THERE

Where do I want to go, what do I want to be. The “there” is somewhere you are moving towards or looking forward to. This simple shift gets you thinking about the future or where you are going, and more importantly what you will need to do today in order to achieve that future.

Thinking about the “There” is empowering because it allows you to let go of your present circumstances and focus on the steps necessary to get to where you want to go.

When I’m doing a strategic planning session with a group it’s important to decide on where we are, or the “HERE” first. Once the “HERE” is established and understood by the team it becomes much easier to decide on the “THERE” together and put your energy and effort towards where you are going, instead of where you’ve been.

So the next time you start thinking to yourself that things are “down” today or you are at some sort or low point in your business or in your life. Do yourself a huge service and describe it as “HERE” This is where you are today, it’s not down, it’s not up, its’ just here.

Then make a choice to decide on the “THERE” and take action to get yourself moving in that direction.

Until next time

Cheers to you and your continued success- and identifying the THERE
