I’ve been fortunate in my career over the past 20 years to work with some amazing individuals and organizations that have all achieved at the highest level. During that time I’ve observed and gained clarity around some valuable lessons that high performers tend to repeat over and over again. Through coaching discussions, practice and simple trial and error, I’ve simplified a 3-step formula for success that can apply to any area of your life. To kick off the Labor Day Weekend, I thought putting a little work into your own personal success would be a great way to head into the final 3rd of 2021.

So here goes!

Identify exactly what you want.

This sound like the easiest part of the process but actually can be the most difficult. What do you really want? Not what you kind of want or what would be really nice if you got but what do you truly want.

In order to answer this question you will have to get past all of your personal BS- Belief Systems, and dig down deep enough to be aware and figure it out. Most people haven’t taken the time to really know who they are at their core and be in a position to answer this question honestly.

What’s interesting is that almost everyone I meet can tell me exactly what they DON’T want. The challenge is that whatever you put your focus into, well that is what you are going to get.

If you focus on negativity, then you will get negativity. If you focus on what is wrong with your business or your relationships, then you will get more of what is wrong illuminated to you everyday.

Your task is taking all that energy and focus and apply it to what you really want. Your brain absolutely despises a void so in the absence of clarity your brain will fill in the blanks for you. Very rarely is that blank space intentional or a desired outcome.

If you want to achieve at a high level, start getting clear on exactly what you want.

Surround Yourself with the Tools or the People to be Successful.

Simply put, if you want to be successful then surround yourself or latch onto people that are already doing the things you want to be doing.

It’s one thing to say you want to be a top producing sales person. It’s quite another thing to shadow a successful salesperson for a week and learn everything that they do during their day to be a top producer.

Have you read anything lately about how to become an exceptional leader? Have you attended seminars or courses in person or on-line on how to do the very thing you say you want to. Clarity is only a start, if you are not willing to take the actions associated with your goal then it’s all just talk.

Who are you spending your time with? Are they successful? What are you listening to on your radio or smartphone? Does it teach you how to grow and learn or does it keep you from moving forward? What are you reading or watching on TV? Does it inspire you to take action, or cause you to lay around on the couch all day and eat junk food?

Who is coaching or mentoring you to get to the next level? Are they the right person or the person to help you get where you want to go?

Highly successful people have the right tools and surround themselves with the right people to achieve.

Win the Internal Battle

I’m not about to get all touchy feely on you, and the fact is that 80% of your ability to achieve comes from having the right mindset, and only 20% comes you’re your skills, clarity and having the right tools in place.

We all know people of tremendous skill and ability that haven’t accomplished anything, and yet we probably all know someone with seemingly limited skill and ability that has moved mountains. It’s because they have mastered the inner game of success.

Look, if you are clear on what you want, and have to ability, tools and people around you to get it done, then why haven’t you done it yet?

It’s probably because there is always some sort of push and pull, limiting belief, or inner struggle that keeps you from achieving your goal.

Maybe you want to make more money, but there is another part of you that wants to spend more time with your family?

Maybe part of you wants to lose weight and be healthy, but the other part of you really wants to watch the next episode of your latest Netflix addiction?

Maybe you want to achieve huge success in your business but part of you feels you will be abandoned by someone you really care about when that happens?

The list goes on and on, but winning this inner battle with yourself is the final and probably the most important piece of achievement. And again this all starts by taking the time to be present and fully self-aware of who you are, what you want and all that you stand for.

As I said the formula for success is really simple, but it’s not easy. Being successful takes a lot of work and self-reflection. The good news for all of us is that success is no secret and anybody that chooses to do the work can achieve at the highest level once you start putting the steps into practice.
